Shanxi and Hungary share a startling demographic fact: both received deep gene-and-language influence from the steppe horsemen who Europeans called Huns and the Chinese called Xiongnu. Shanxi's loess basin was the corridor through which steppe peoples entered the Chinese heartland; the Hungarian plain was the western terminus of the same migration.
