Hong Kong is Venice. Shenzhen is Florence. Luoyang is Athens. Wuhan is Alexandria. Behind these pairings is a deeper claim: the BaiYue peoples are the Latins; the Northern Mandarin world is the Germanic; the Yangtze is the Mediterranean. Step through 25 carefully drawn parallels — and the three deep axes that hold them together.

BaiYue ↔ Latin

Southern China's BaiYue peoples and southern Europe's Latin peoples occupy the same civilizational latitude — Mediterranean climate, seafaring instinct, mercantile cities, decentralised maritime republics. From Venetian galleys to Hokkien junks, from Florentine bankers to Cantonese compradors, the institutional rhyme is uncanny.

Mediterranean ↔ Yangtze

The third axis is the spine itself: the Yangtze is to East Asian civilization what the Mediterranean is to the West — a long, navigable corridor of cities, dialects, and trade, around which the entire civilization arranged itself. Wuhan is to the Yangtze what Alexandria is to the Mediterranean: not the capital, but the gravity well.

This atlas is not a list of resemblances. It is a thesis: that the way human civilization arranges itself on a large continental landmass — coastline merchant republics in the south, agrarian bureaucratic heartlands in the north, a long navigable corridor as the spine — repeats. Latin Europe and BaiYue China are not similar by coincidence. They are similar because the underlying geography forced similar institutions.

Read it as a tool. If you understand what Venice was, you understand what Hong Kong is. If you understand what a 17th-century Dutch port did, you understand what a 21st-century Hebei port does. The map below is not a history — it is a way to read history twice.
