“Two improbable city-states that taught the world how money grows when it can sail.”「
The pair配对
Hong Kong and Venice are the same idea twice. A small, defensible harbour on the edge of a continental empire, leveraged into a financial node that outweighs its hinterland by an order of magnitude. Both invented the institutions money needed to leave the ground: double-entry book-keeping in Venice (1494, Pacioli); offshore banking and bearer trusts in Hong Kong (post-1949). Both speak a creole — Venetian, Cantonese-English — that became the language of trade. Both punch laughably above their weight because they sit at exactly the right gate.
