The cities where their civilization most wants to look at itself in the mirror.

The pair配对

Shanghai and Paris are the boulevards their civilizations dress up for. Both grew enormous between 1850 and 1930, and both spent the rest of the 20th century deciding what to do with the architecture, the music halls, the journalism, the fashion industry, and the new middle class that period built. Both are river cities whose river is a national symbol. Both have a relationship with their political capital that is one part affection, one part eye-roll.

Parallels平行处

  • An era-defining urban planning episode (Haussmann; the Bund + concessions).

  • A magnetic literary scene that punches above the city's economy.

  • A fashion industry as soft-power vehicle of the whole nation.

  • A media gravity well that determines national mood.

Where the mirror cracks

  • Shanghai's foreign quarter was extraterritorial; Paris's was never.

Both cities are now museums of themselves and engines of new culture at the same time — which is exactly what global cosmopolitan capitals are supposed to be.
